Executive Director

Classification: Full Time (32 hours, 4 days per week)
Location: Remote (applications are open to both USA or UK residents - please note we are unable to sponsor visas for either country)
Reports to: The Board of Trustees
Salary: T1International is committed to salary transparency. The transparent, formula-based salary range is approximately £58,000 - £73,000 or $73,000 - $92,000. The salary offered will be determined according to a salary scale which considers years of experience, location, job category, and other factors - including budget - but is expected to be between the amounts listed.

T1International is a global grassroots patient advocacy organisation led by people with and impacted by diabetes, focusing on type 1 diabetes. We believe in a world where everyone with type 1 diabetes has the opportunity to thrive, with affordable and sustainable access to the medicine and supplies they need. We are patient-led in our work and values, and our team and community reflect a range of allies and impacted communities, from caregivers to parents to partners and those committed to health equity work. T1International (T1I) is leading the fight for affordable insulin and supplies worldwide. We do not accept funding from the pharmaceutical industry or any medical device manufacturer to maintain our independence and ability to speak freely.

About the role
The role of the Executive Director (ED) is to oversee and manage all operations of T1International and T1International USA. The ED ensures that T1International is carrying out its mission and living according to its values, and is responsible for ensuring the long-term impact of T1International, including its sustainability as an organisation. The person in this role will work closely with Directors in the United States, with staff in the UK, and across multiple time zones in the United States.

Responsibilities
Organisational Leadership and Management (40%)

  • Set strategic priorities and direction for the USA and Global entities in partnership with the other Directors and Board of Trustees
  • Develop organisational strategic objectives and ensure cohesion with staff team work plans
  • Ensure T1International maintains mission, strategic and entity alignment through it’s program delivery
  • Ensure that all programs, projects, and activities are integrated and advance our mission, as well as find and fill gaps in internal systems to ensure that work is executed in a thoughtful, measured way with an equitable impact
  • Set and supervise communications strategy, including overseeing all charity communications
  • Manage USA-based and UK-based staff, partners, and others to motivate them (as a coach, advisor, thought partner) and to hold them accountable to meet expectations and achieve what is set out in their roles and the organisational strategy
  • Ensure a healthy organisational culture, maintain the organisation’s commitment to health equity, and decolonization work
  • Act as liaison/primary interface between the Board of Trustees and the organisation
  • Act as the primary spokesperson for T1International, i.e. in press inquiries, important events, etc.

Fundraising (40%)

  • Alongside the Community Development Director, set UK and USA entity fundraising goals and targets.
  • Ensure the organisation reaches agreed fundraising targets, including identifying new funders and developing and maintaining relationships with foundations and donors.
  • Maintain and grow Major Donor relationships and corporate relationships, as well as identify and cultivate new ones.
  • Lead and support grants work, inclusive of developing and managing relationships and researching and drafting applications.
  • Identify, develop and maintain strategic partnerships with like-minded entities and leaders.

Operations and Finance (20%)

  • Oversee and ensure the financial and organisational health of T1International.
  • Set and manage the UK and USA entity budgets, approximately £225,000 and $365,000 respectively for 2024.
  • Alongside Operations Managers, ensure organisational compliance inclusive of operations, finance, and HR.

Skills and Experience

  • 7-10 years of nonprofit experience.
  • 4+ years of senior leadership (e.g. Director) experience.
  • 5+ years of external relationship building.
  • 3+ years of fundraising experience.
  • Experience managing budgets, with a strong understanding of nonprofit financial management, organisational and operational structures.
  • A proven track record of leadership in at least some of the following: diabetes, advocacy, global health, access to medicines, non-communicable diseases, drug pricing policy and movements, the nonprofit sector, and community/grassroots organising.
  • Existing knowledge and/or willingness to put in the time and effort to gain a full understanding of the global insulin landscape (including diabetes, insulin pricing issues, legal and political drug pricing issues, the pharmaceutical industry, diabetes organisations within the space, etc.).
  • Alignment with T1International’s patient-led ethos and values.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and transparently with leadership, staff, and volunteers.
  • Experience in managing or serving on a Board of Directors.
  • Experience managing a culturally and geographically diverse organisation and team.
  • Experience in building remote work cultures.
  • Experience leading small, growing nonprofits.
  • Demonstrated strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to distil and present complex information to varied audiences.
  • Preferred: Direct personal experience with diabetes.
  • Preferred: Experience from a community that is underrepresented in the diabetes space.

Process
Ideal candidates will be available to start in 2024. This job posting will be live through February 12 and we will be contacting candidates on a rolling basis during this time. All interviews will be held via Google Meet. We anticipate that the application process will include the following steps and timeline:

  • Phone screenings (through February 19)
  • First-round interviews (weeks of February 12 and 19)
  • Second-round interviews (weeks of February 26 and March 4)
  • We may include a task-based exercise related to this role and your experience and will complete a reference check for final candidates.
