Fighting for an Insulin Price Cap

Insulin is as necessary to a person with diabetes as oxygen is to any human being, and there are millions of people worldwide that rely on injected insulin to stay alive and healthy. Insulin was first used to treat a person with diabetes in 1922. The discoverers sold the patent for $1 each so it could be accessible for all.

  • Three companies, Eli Lilly, Novo Nordisk, and Sanofi, dominate more than 90% of the insulin market.
  • While production of insulin costs around $6 to manufacture, these three companies are charging around $300 for a single vial of insulin (most people need 2-4 vials per month).
  • Since the 1990s, the cost of insulin has increased in the USA over 1,200%.
  • One of every four patients with type 1 diabetes has had to ration their insulin due to cost. Many have died.

This crisis is forcing patients to resort to drastic measures to stay alive. When a person is dependent on a drug to live, Big Pharma can increase their prices to whatever the market will bear. Capping the price of insulin at the pharmacy counter for anyone who needs it, regardless of insurance, will save lives as we work on more structural changes to lower the cost of insulin. We're working on multiple solutions to improve accessibility and affordability of insulin.
